Comparision of sports "India and China"?
We and the media focus to compare them in all the ways on economy, freedom and global standing.
Let's call it under-performance because that is what it is. Easy to blame the government. While I agree the govt should have an oversight committee to make sure the funding goes to the proper entities, its not the govt alone that is responsible.
Like all govts in the world, they have bigger fishes to fry and bigger headaches to tackle. But, why can't the fortune-500 conglomerates do anything about it instead of pumping silly money on just cricket? These companies would be the first in line to sponsor the cricket tournaments. I do not disagree with us having a passion for cricket. Every country has its following in a particular sport. But other sports are not ignored and allowed to fend for themselves.
What about the general attitude of some of the athletes, media and the public like us in supporting these athletes from other sports. We only talk or debate about them every 4 years. I bet one cannot find even a water cooler talk among friends on sports other than cricket. The media does not give a darn about these sports or athletes after the Olympics. It was hilarious when one of the news channels had a billiards pro as an analyst during these games.I was stumped to find consistently the news about the medal winners behind the on-goings of a meaningless cricket T20 game in the sports sections.
I would have surely thought the Olympics and our performance would trump the sports landscape at least these 2 weeks. Last, but not the least, the attitudes of some of our athletes was left wanting. Comments made by some of them was astonishing. One athlete termed her performance as being very satisfactory and she was happy. This, after crashing out in the first round! Another athlete was lamenting about not having physiologists as part of the contingent for motivation ! Let me get this straight. Some of our athletes cannot get motivated enough by representing themselves for national or even personal pride.
Lets not forget the disgrace that is the Indian Hockey team. Unlike others, they do have sponsorship to not come in last. Name me one athlete worth their salt who would not be disappointed in general after a poor performance. Where is the self-esteem and national pride or even personal pride? If that is the ceiling and standard one sets for their performance, no wonder we are perennial underachievers in sports. All it takes is Attitude and hard work and the commitment to excel. Not everything requires millions of dollars worth of funding. And please. Lets stop blaming the judges and officials of the Olympics for our failures. Every country was laid the same deck of cards. While I heartily congratulate the athletes who won the medals, sadly we have a long way to go and we have to decide as a nation if we are going to simply rejoice, revel and gloat in this performance.
Nowhere to go but up from here i think.
